One suspect died and four suspects were arrested after a shootout in Lenasia, south of Johannesburg on Friday afternoon. This comes after a vehicle was stolen in Vereeniging.

Shortly after 14:30, the vehicle tracking company Ctrack’s recovery team was dispatched after the owner of a Toyota Fortuner phoned in and notified them that her vehicle was stolen. A second team was dispatched shortly thereafter, along with Lenasia SAPS.

Within an hour, the five suspects were apprehended at a busy intersection in Lenasia near the Trade Route Mall. A shootout subsequently followed between the suspects and the police, during which all five suspects were wounded.

One suspect was in a critical condition and died on the way to Baragwanath hospital, where the other three suspects were also transported to for further treatment. The fifth suspect suffered only minor injuries and is being held for questioning by the Lenasia SAPS.

Ctrack recovered the Toyota Fortuner as well as a Hummer H1, allegedly also stolen.
